Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, grandmother, and her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford began to become fascinated by acting during her teens, she joined the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. However, she already made a TV appearance on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
